Cougars Fall 1-0 to LSU in Tight Contest

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston submitted a spirited defensive effort Sunday against LSU, but the Lady Tigers were able to capitalize on a set piece and protect the 1-0 lead to drop the Cougars to 0-2 on the season
• The Cougars surrendered seven corner kick opportunities to LSU over the course of the game, and in the 25th minute of the game, the Cougars paid the price. Marlena Cutura booted the corner in from the right side of the keeper, where a waiting Jordane Carvery managed to head in the entry past Lauren Killian.
• Mary Kate Bowers, Hannah Huizenga and Laura Ortega had the three shots on goal for the Cougars on the day. All told, LSU won the battle of the shot chart 13-6.
• Meredith Tunney and Tracey Webster were selected to the Charleston Classic All-Tournament team for their collective strong efforts over the course of the weekend. Tunney in particular was a work horse on the defensive end, playing all 90 minutes against the Lady Tigers.
“Both teams played hard Friday night matches, and typically Sundays are a lot tougher,” head coach Christian Michner said. “The game slows down, and you've really got to be focused. All in all, I'm happy with our effort over the entire weekend.”
“It's really important for us to be exposed to some of the highest level of competition in the country. LSU's an excellent team, well-coached, there's no doubt they're a Top 25 program, and it was a great test for us.”
The Cougars will have the next week to make adjustments before hopping a flight to the Lone Star State to take part in the University of Texas Tournament in Austin. They will face the Texas Longhorns on Friday, followed by the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Sunday.
