AUSTIN, TEXAS – The College of Charleston women's soccer team (1-3) took advantage of an early red card assessed to Sam Houston State (0-4), and proceeded to launch a hailstorm of shots at the short-handed Bearkats defense en route to a dominant 3-0 victory.
• After over a dozen shots, and a scoreless first half, the Cougars finally cracked the Bearkat defense thanks to Laura Ortega's strike (67'). Less than two minutes later, Jessica Schifer pressed replay and tallied one of her own on a pass from Maddy Brill-Edwards.
• Raymara Barreto took the lead in the CofC scoring race with a three-point afternoon. She picked up the assist on Ortega's game-winner, and went on to pick up a late insurance goal for CofC in the 87th minute on an assist from Sarah Blakely.
• Lauren Killian earned her first shutout of the season with a modest two-save game. Baillie Fout provided relief during the 78thh minute with the game all but decided.
• Thanks to SHSU's Kylie Dick picking up a red card in the 15th minute, the Cougars had a lot of space to work on the offensive end. As a result, they clobbered the Bearkats in the shots battle 29-8, picking up 12 shots on goal to SHSU's three.
"It was a pretty dominant performance from us over the course of the ninety minutes today,” head coach Christian Michner said. “We created a lot of opportunities to score, but we just weren't good enough in front of goal. We're excited to get a good win on the road and, hopefully, the first of many this season."
The Cougars return to the Lowcountry tonight, and will have a quick turnaround Wednesday when they face the Charleston Southern Buccaneers (2-1) at home.
“It's a quick turnaround for us as we host CSU in a Wednesday night encounter which is not typical for our rhythm,” Michner said. “We'll be happy to be back in front of our home fans at Patriots Point.”
