WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – An old Southern Conference rivalry played out as the College of Charleston volleyball team (3-3) fought point-for-point for a 3-0 sweep of Davidson, 25-17, 25-23 and 25-23, to close out tournament play at the Demon Deacon Classic on Saturday night at LJVM Coliseum.
The Cougars were led by freshman outside hitter Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio), who had a near double-double performance with a career-and season-high 12 kills and nine digs against the Wildcats (2-4). She was joined in double-figure kills by senior middle blocker Maddie Hills (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) with 11 and junior middle blocker Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio) with 10.
Last weekend, Davidson beat Colonial Athletic Association rival UNCW on their home court in three sets.
CofC played its most complete match of the tournament after a 3-0 loss to host Wake Forest earlier on Saturday afternoon. Mummey led the Cougars against the Demon Deacons with eight kills making contact with 42.9 percent of her attacks followed by Hills and junior outside hitter Riana Brennan (Los Gatos, Calif.) with six kills each. Hills and Brennan combined for six of the team's 12 blocks versus Wake.

Coach Kepner Post-Tournament Thoughts: “It (Davidson win) was a great way to end the weekend. I was really proud of how the girls responded against a really good Davidson team. We made a lot of big-time plays in clutch moments tonight, which we weren't making earlier. This is definitely a step in the right direction.”
Cougar Dominance: CofC has now won the last 27-straight matches against the Wildcats since the 2001 season and is 2-0 since both program's conference realignment to the CAA and Atlantic 10.
Up Next: The Cougars will play host to intracity rival Charleston Southern, Eastern Michigan and VCU in the Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley CofC Classic on Sept. 9-10 at TD Arena. Admission is free to the public.
