Cougars Eying Revenge Against Phoenix in Curing Kids Cancer Game

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (5-9, 2-1) hosts the Elon (11-4, 3-0) this Friday at 6:30 p.m., as the Cougars will look to strike back against the Phoenix in the Curing Kids Cancer game.

The Cougars have ripped off two wins in a row thanks in large part to the efforts of CAA Player of the Week Breanna Bolden, who averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds and three steals per game to open the CofC slate. Bolden has accumulated two straight double-doubles in the CofC victories against William & Mary and UNCW, the latter of which snapped the Tribe's 11-game winning streak. Tanisha Brown also got in on the action, scoring 16 points and ten rebounds in the win over the Seahawks, making it the first game this season that two Cougars registered double-doubles simultaneously.

Bolden's conference honors also spanned the Cougars' conference-opener on the road against Elon, during which Bolden scored 23 points and added nine rebounds and three steals. Though the Cougars won the opening period 22-14, Elon responded with a big second quarter and grinded out the 70-57 win.

The Cougars and Phoenix are all knotted up in the all-time series at 14-14, but Elon has had the decided advantage of late, winning 10 of their last 11 encounters dating back to 2011.

Through three games of conference play, the Phoenix is atop the CAA as the only team still undefeated in conference play, having won both of their games last weekend against Drexel and Delaware. Elon narrowly defeated Drexel 48-45 in Philadelphia before returning home to clobber the Blue Hens 69-42.

Junior guard Shay Burnett is the team's Swiss Army Knife, doing a little of everything to help power the Phoenix. She averages the most points (11.8), rebounds (7.2) and steals (1.9) while contributing 57 assists on the year. Lauren Brown is also a potent scorer for Elon at 11.3 PPG, while Essence Baucom runs the point with 60 helpers on the year.

Grainne and Clay Own founded Curing Kids Cancer, a 501(c) devoted to funding cutting edge pediatric cancer therapies, after they lost their son Killian to leukemia in 2003 when he was nine years old. Since it was founded in 2005, Curing Kids Cancer has raised more than $8 Million to fund new childhood cancer treatments and research.
