Cougars Overrun Spartans 7-0 in Home Opener

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season in dominant fashion Friday afternoon, delivering a 7-0 drubbing against the USC Upstate Spartans (0-2).
The Cougars picked up the doubles point with relative ease, with Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely sweeping the second flight 6-0. Mara Argyriou and Christi Woodson picked up the 6-1 win in the top flight, and Sarah Zschunke and Helena Nyikos pulled away for the 6-2 win in the third flight.
Nyikos has the most dominant showing in singles action, knocking off Valeria Zarama 6-0, 6-1 in the fourth flight. Senior Mara Argyriou had a similarly strong outing, beating Eduarda Ferreira 6-2, 6-0 in flight three. Conversely, Liza Fieldsend and Filippa Ericson's flight one match went down to the wire in the most evenly matched confrontation of the afternoon. Ericson took the first set 6-1, but Fieldsend responded with a 6-4 win in set two, leading to a super tiebreaker where Fieldsend pulled away for the 10-6 victory.
Anastasia Palaska reached the milestone of the first dual win of her collegiate career with a 7-5, 6-2 win in flight six over Morgan Dodd. Christi Woodson (6-2, 6-2) and Rachel McNeely (7-5, 6-1) rounded out the victories for CofC in the second and fifth flights respectively.
Next up, the Cougars will enjoy Saturday's Alumni Weekend festivities before hosting Winthrop on February 4 at 1 p.m.
