WILMINGTON, N.C. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team (8-7-1; 3-4-1) dropped an early goal that proved to be their undoing on Thursday night, as the Cougars fell 1-0 to the UNCW Seahawks (6-10-2; 2-5-1).
• The Seahawks got on the board in the fourth minute shortly after a corner kick by Serenity Waters, who got the ball back off a deflection and served it into the box where a waiting Baley Edwards fired it home for what wound up being the only goal of the game.
• UNCW dominated the early pace of the game, but CofC eventually corrected and made it a much more even affair. Both teams had ample scoring opportunities with 13 shots a piece and a combined 13 corners between them.
• Sydney Schneider had an excellent game in net for the Seahawks, earning the shutout by way of an eight-save performance.
Genevieve Henderson had a strong night of her own on the other end of the pitch with five saves on the night.
•
Laura Ortega had the most shots of any player on either team with five, three of which found their way on frame. It was
Alyssa Beck with the best quality looks on the night, with both of her blasts finding their way to the net, and would have scored if not for Schneider's strong play.
• With the loss and an overtime win by James Madison over Drexel, the Cougars fall to fifth place in the conference. Heading into Sunday, they can seal a conference tournament berth with either a win or a draw against the Hofstra Pride. They could also potentially host a quarterfinal matchup if they are able to win and JMU loses or draws with Delaware.
