Brown’s Heroics Topples Tribe 71-69 in Overtime

WILLIAMSBURG, VA.Shiclasia Brown came up big for the College of Charleston women's basketball team (9-16, 6-8) when it mattered most Friday night, scoring the winning layup with two seconds left on the clock to knock off William & Mary (16-9, 7-7) 71-69 in overtime.

• Cailin Dorsey, who drew the first start of her collegiate career, hit a monster three to set the tone for the overtime period and give the College the 63-60 lead. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the period, until William & Mary tied things back up at 69-69 with 25 seconds left on a jumper from Latrice Hunter. On the Cougars' final possession of the game, Nola Henry fired the ball in to Brown, who came streaking in from the corner. With two defenders in the area, she was forced into a fade-away lob from her left side that found its way home to seal the CofC win. Brown ended with a 16-6-3 with four steals and a block.

"I'm really proud of the way Clay's game has matured and evolved, especially over the last couple of games," head coach Candice M. Jackson said. "She hit some extremely big shots for us tonight, and proved she's not afraid to rise to the occasion. That's great to see especially at this point in the season, with some of our biggest games right around the corner."

• The Cougars led for the opening two quarters before surrendering a 13-0 run to the Tribe in the third, which relinquished the lead. The Cougars played catchup until the very end of regulation. Once again, with the College trailing 60-57 with under 20 seconds left in the period, Shiclasia Brown was the hero with an And-One jumper. With the game tied, William & Mary got a layup attempt in to Abby Rendle, who whiffed on the chance as the game went to bonus time.

Tanisha Brown had an excellent game of her own, scoring a game-high and career-high 24 points on 10 of 18 shooting to go with 12 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. It was the junior's ninth double-double of the season.

• As one would expect from an overtime game, the two teams were evenly matched in several phases. The Tribe was credited with 10 more assists than CofC on the night, but the College benefited not only by limiting the normally hot-shooting Tribe to 3 of 16 from long range, but forced them into committing a season-high 25 turnovers.

Breanna Bolden had a quiet night by her standards with 12 points, five rebounds and four steals, but nonetheless made waves by breaking Wilma Simpson's CofC Division I Era career-rebounding record when she picked up her 806th board. The senior had the College hold its collective breath when she went down after getting tangled up with the Tribe's Marlena Tremba. The incident forced her to leave the game, but to the relief of all, she was able to return in overtime.

• For W&M, Alexandra Masaquel led the day with a 16-13 with four blocks before fouling out in the fourth. Tremba also fouled out after going 0 of 14 from the field, but recording 9 rebounds, 10 assists and four steals. Abby Rendle made William & Mary history with a four-block night to break the school's single-season blocks record.

• At 6-8 against the CAA, the Cougars have registered their highest conference win-total during the Candice M. Jackson coaching era.

The Cougars now return home for a three-game home-stand, beginning on Sunday at 2 p.m. against James Madison.
