CofC Drops Pitching Duel on Final Day of Wyndham Garden Cougar Classic

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Izzy Berouty was stellar in relief, tossing 4.2 perfect innings, but the College of Charleston wasted several scoring opportunities in dropping a 2-1 decision to Winthrop in the final game of the Wyndham Garden Cougar Classic at Patriots Point.

Berouty relieved starter Sam Martin with two on and one out in the third and the Cougars trailing 2-0. The freshman got a pair of ground outs to limit the damage in that frame and proceeded to set the Eagles down in order in each of the next four innings to give CofC (6-2) a chance at a comeback victory.

Her impressive outing came a day after tossing five shutout innings in a starting role in a 4-0 win over Monmouth, and she has yet to allow a run while giving up only nine hits, walking one and striking out eight in 16.2 innings to start her college career.

The Cougars outhit Winthrop 7-5 and had five other batters reach via walks and hit by pitches but left 10 runners on base in the frustrating defeat. CofC left the bases loaded in the first, stranded two in the fourth after an RBI infield single by Izzy McCluskey and again filled the sacks in the fifth but was mostly unable to break through against Winthrop pitcher Kiley Majette as the Eagles (6-4) completed a perfect 5-0 weekend in Charleston.

CofC threatened one last time in the seventh when Yari Felix led off with a bunt single. She advanced to second on a sacrifice by Jordin Jones, but the Cougars left the tie run in scoring position when Majette retired Taylor Belfiore and Lexee Emanuel to end the game. Emanuel had two of CofC's hits including a double.

The Cougars are back on the road next weekend when they take on South Carolina and North Dakota State twice each at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia.
