Cougars Fall to North Dakota State, South Carolina at Gamecock Invitational

Columbia, S.C. – The College of Charleston ran into a pair of aces on Sunday and was able to come up with a total of only eight hits in losses to North Dakota State and South Carolina to wrap up play at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia.

The Cougars dropped a 7-3 decision to the Bison and an 8-2 contest to the host Gamecocks and are 7-5 on the season. CofC is back in action next Friday through Sunday at the Wilson/DeMarini Classic in Auburn, Ala., with games against Savannah State, Texas State, Liberty and the host Tigers.

CofC took a 1-0 lead in the second against North Dakota State when Lexee Emanuel doubled and came across to score when Sara Garcia was thrown out at second trying to steal. Sydney Shipley was sharp in the circle in the early going, allowing only one base runner and striking out five before the Bison struck in the fourth.

Two walks and a bunt single loaded the bases with nobody out, and Vanessa Anderson cleared the bags with a grand slam. Izzy Berouty relieved Shipley and gave up another run in the inning before the Bison were finally retired with a 5-1 lead.

Taylor Belfiore hit her second home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth, and Jordin Jones smashed her first in the seventh but it was not enough to overcome the pitching of Jacquelyn Sertic. The reigning Summit League Pitcher of the Year gave up only three hits – all for extra bases – in the complete game and has an ERA of 1.49.

Summerville High School graduate Summer Jenkins made her debut in the circle for the Cougars and allowed two hits and an unearned run in two innings.

Like it did in its game against South Carolina on Saturday, CofC jumped out to a lead in the top of the first, scoring twice on an RBI single by Jones and a run-scoring double by Emanuel, her second two-base hit of the day. But the combination of starter Nickie Blue and reliever Jessica Elliott held the Cougars to only three hits the rest of the way, including a double by Belfiore in the fourth.

Blue is 6-0 with an ERA of 1.34 after her five innings against the Cougars.

The Gamecocks scored single runs in the second and fourth to tie it before tallying three times each in the fifth and sixth to break the game open.
