Early Spark Lifts Kent State Over CofC

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- Erven Roper (Easley, S.C.) and Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.) each collected two hits, and Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) drove in two runs, as Kent State struck for eight early runs en route to a 13-4 victory over the College of Charleston baseball team on Friday evening at Patriots Point.

Kent State (8-4) plated 13 runs on 18 hits – including three for extra bases – while limiting College of Charleston (7-7) to four tallies on eight base knocks, five of which went for additional bags. Roper and Mundy paced the Cougars with two hits each, while Hart plated two runs and Roper scored two.

Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) tossed two innings in his first collegiate start, and allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out one. Christian Shiver (Monroe, Ga.) pitched two innings in relief, while Max McKinley (Tallahassee, Fla.) threw four shutout frames. Trent Rider (Warfordsburg, Pa.) pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.

Pete Schuler led the way for Kent State with a 4-for-5 effort, driving in four runs and scoring three more. John Matthews added three base knocks and two RBIs, while Luke Burch, Mason Mamarella, and Josh Hollander each collected two hits.

Eli Kraus allowed three runs on five hits, and struck out four in six innings of work to pick up the win. Austin Havekost surrendered two runs – one earned – in three frames to earn the save.

The Golden Flashes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, before the Cougars responded with a two-run double by Hart in the home half to cut the advantage to 3-2. Kent State countered with a five-run top of the second, extending the margin to 8-2 on a three-run homer to right by Schuler. The Golden Flashes added a pair in the top of the third after Matthews singled home two.

Roper got one back for the Cougars in the home half, launching a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right for his first big fly of the season to cut the lead to 10-3. Kent State capped its scoring for the night in the fourth, plating three runs on singles by Burch and Brad Hamilton to push the advantage to 13-3. The Cougars would add to their total when Seth Wall (Georgetown, S.C.) and Mundy hit back-to-back doubles with one out to trim the margin to 13-4.

The Cougars and Golden Flashes will meet in game two of the three-game weekend set on Saturday afternoon, which will feature CofC sophomore Evan Sisk (Chester, S.C.) opposite Kent State junior Zach Willeman. First pitch is set for 2:30 pm.
