Roper, Love Lead Cougars To 10-7 Win Over Kent State

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- Erven Roper (Easley, S.C.) went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and finished a triple shy of the cycle, and Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) struck out eight straight batters to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to a 10-7 come-from-behind win over Kent State on Saturday evening.

College of Charleston (8-7) scored 10 runs on 13 hits – including five for extra bases – compared to seven tallies on 12 base knocks for Kent State (8-5). Roper tied his career-high with four hits and three RBIs, while launching his second home run of the weekend. Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.), Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.), Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.), and Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) each collected two hits, as Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.) drove in three runs.

Evan Sisk (Chester, S.C.) got the nod and pitched two innings with three strikeouts. Love entered to start the third, and promptly retired eight straight batters by way of the K. The 6-foot-5 junior finished the night with four and two-thirds shutout innings of work, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight to earn the win. Jakob Frishmuth (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) tossed two and one-third scoreless frames to pick up his first collegiate save.

Luke Burch led the way for Kent State with a 4-for-5 effort, while Sam Hurt drove in two runs. Dylan Rosa collected two hits, as Burch, Rosa, and Mason Mamarella each scored twice.

Zach Willeman took the ball and lasted two and two-thirds innings, surrendering nine runs on six hits and walking five. Connor Wollersheim pitched three and two-thirds frames in relief, while Patrick Dayton tossed the final one and two-thirds.

The Golden Flashes got on the board early with four runs on five hits in the top of the first. Singles by Mamarella, Hurt, and Tim DalPorto each scored runs to give Kent State an early 4-0 lead. Charleston answered with a six-run home half, highlighted by a two-run shot down the left field line by Roper. Ricther would cap the inning with a bases-clearing three-run double to left center to put the Cougars ahead, 6-4.

A three-run second put Kent State back on top, 7-6, before Dixon plated two runs with a single up the middle in the home half to give the Cougars an 8-7 advantage. Roper would extend the lead to 9-7 with a double in the third after Manzo walked and stole second. The Cougars pushed the margin to 10-7 in the fourth, when Dixon doubled, advanced to third on a bunt single by Hart, and scored on a throwing error by the Kent State pitcher.

Charleston would threaten again in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs before the Golden Flashes got the force out at second to maintain the deficit. Kent State stranded two in the seventh, and one in the eighth before putting runners at the corners with one out in the ninth. Frishmuth would quickly settle down and get out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly to center to end the game.

The Cougars and Golden Flashes will meet in in the rubber game of the three-game weekend set on Sunday afternoon, which will feature CofC junior Tucker White (Sterling, Okla.) opposite Kent State sophomore Joey Murray. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
