Charleston, S.C. – College of Charleston senior second baseman Dana Horgan capped a tremendous day at the plate with a three-run triple in the fifth to wrap up an 8-0 win over Northern Kentucky and a split of two games at the Holy City Showdown on Friday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (9-9) were edged by North Carolina 3-2 in their earlier game when the Tar Heels broke a tie in the seventh on an RBI single by Berlynne Delamora. CofC returns to action on Saturday against Chattanooga at 3:30 and Robert Morris at 8.
Horgan went 3-for-3 with five RBI in the win over the Norse after tripling twice, driving in a run and scoring once against UNC. She finished with five hits in as many official at bats in the two games, raising her season batting average to .312.
Brittany Violette also starred in the win over Northern Kentucky, allowing only two hits and setting a career high with eight strikeouts. In lowering her ERA to 1.35, the sophomore retired the first 12 batters she faced before giving up a pair of singles to start the fifth. She then kept the shutout intact when she proceeded to strike out the next three batters.
The Cougars exploded for five runs on five hits in the first against the Norse including RBI singles by Madi Brown and Lexee Emanuel, a run-scoring double by Sara Garcia and a two-run single by Horgan. It stayed a 5-0 game until CofC loaded the bases in the fifth, and Horgan ended the game with her third triple of the day.
Garcia and Emanuel both had two hits against Northern Kentucky while Emanuel, Garcia and Katie Padilla scored a pair of runs.
The Cougars were unable to capitalize on several solid scoring opportunities in their loss to the Tar Heels. Horgan gave CofC a 2-1 lead in the first with a two-run triple, but was thrown out at home trying to score after another three-base hit in the fifth. Taylor Belfiore doubled with two outs in the sixth but was stranded and after UNC took the lead in the seventh, the Cougars had runners at second and third and one out kn the bottom of the inning but wound up leaving the bases loaded.
Izzy Berouty started against the Tar Heels and allowed six hits and three runs with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Violette got the final two outs in the seventh after UNC went in front and got a pair of ground outs to give the Cougars a chance to pull it out in the bottom of the frame.
