CofC Uses Long Ball to Record a Pair of Saturday Victories

Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Dana Horgan and Taylor Belfiore both slammed two home runs and Jordin Jones drove in a total of five runs to lead the College of Charleston to wins over Lafayette and Western Carolina on the first day of the Charleston Challenge at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (13-10) ended both games early via the run rule, downing Lafayette 9-1 in six innings before defeating Western Carolina 8-0 in five. CofC finishes tournament play tomorrow afternoon with games against Ohio at noon and the Catamounts at 2.

Horgan hit her first two homers of the season, both two-run shots, and scored three times to pace the Cougars over the Leopards. Her first round tripper gave CofC a 3-0 lead in the second and set the stage for offensive fireworks the following inning.

Jones and Belfiore crushed back-to-back home runs in the third, and Horgan made it three long balls in the frame with another two-run blast to give the Cougars a 7-0 cushion. After Lafayette scored in the top of the sixth, RBI singles by Kelly Sinclair and Lexee Emanuel in the bottom of the inning closed out the CofC win.

In addition to her two homers and four RBI, Horgan also stole two bases and started a pair of double plays at second to end potential Leopard threats.

Sam Martin and Sydney Shipley both went three innings in the circle and combined for eight strikeouts. Martin started and allowed two hits and fanned five, and Shipley went the final three to pick up her fourth win of the year, giving up three hits and one unearned run with three punchouts.

Belfiore got the Cougars off to a quick start against the Catamounts with a two-run homer in the first, her second of the day and team-leading fourth of the season. Sara Garcia made it 3-0 with a run-scoring double in the fourth before CofC wrapped it up an inning later.

The Cougars loaded the bases with one out, and Jones cleared them with a ringing line drive to the fence in left center. Emanuel and Katie Padilla followed with RBI singles to create the final eight-run margin.

Izzy Berouty worked all five innings and tossed a three-hit shutout. The Catamounts were able to get runners in scoring position in each of the final three innings but left one at third and a pair at second.
