Argyriou’s Heroics Raise Cougars to 4-3 Win Over Marshall

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Cougars and Thundering Herd went blow for blow in an instant classic Tuesday at Patriots Point, and with the match deadlocked at 3-3, it was senior Mara Argyriou that lifted the College of Charleston women's tennis team with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win on court three to the program's first-ever win against Marshall (10-7).
The Cougars handily won the doubles point with strong play on all three courts. Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely sliced through their opponents 6-1 in the top flight, while Sarah Jane Jones and Christi Woodson, who were playing with one another for the first time, sealed the point with a 6-3 victory in flight three.
Singles play got off to a rocky start with the Thundering Herd winning in the first and fifth flights, but Rachel McNeely evened the score at 2-2 when she beat Anna Pomyatinskaya 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth flight.
Turner Yates briefly gave Charleston the lead in the sixth flight, gutting out a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 come-from-behind win over Daniela Dankanych to put the Cougars up 3-2. Yet Marshall evened things back up less than a minute later, with a three-set win on court two.
With the match on the line, all eyes shifted to the third flight between Argyriou and Maddie Silver, who were already in a third set. The Cypriot went up 4-0 in the set, but Silver wouldn't go down quietly, bringing the score back to 3-4 and 4-5. Nonetheless, Argyriou persevered when the pressure was highest, and CofC prevailed 4-3 to rise to 11-4 on the season.
The Cougars stay home and return to action Wednesday afternoon, when they host the Buffalo Bulls at 1:30 p.m.
