Women’s Tennis Finishes Home Stand with Three Mid-Week Matches
3/20/2017 5:05:00 PM | Women's Tennis
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point will play host to three-straight midweek women's tennis matches, as the College of Charleston (10-4) is slated to host Marshall, Buffalo and Clemson between Tuesday and Thursday.
The Cougars will take on Marshall on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., followed by a match with Buffalo on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. They'll cap off their ten-match home-stand on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. when they host Clemson.
The College comes into the week red-hot, having won their previous five straight matches with victories over UMass, Samford, Appalachian State, Charlotte and SC State. Over that span, Christi Woodson, Mara Argyriou and Anastasia Palaska were absolutely dominant, going a combined 12-2 in singles play.
The Cougars and Thundering Herd have met each of the past two seasons, with Marshall getting the upper hand on both occasions. Last season, Argyriou, Liza Fieldsend and Helena Nyikos all won their singles encounters, but Marshall was able to escape 4-3. The Herd is 10-6 on the season, and top-flight singles ace Derya Turhan is the team's top threat with a 12-3 record on the season.
CofC has met Buffalo once before back in 2015, a match that the Cougars narrowly prevailed in 4-3 thanks to strong play in the lower flights. The Bulls got their first taste of CAA competition earlier this month, falling in a neutral site clash to Towson 4-3. At 6-3 on the year, Buffalo's best singles player is Anna Savchenko, who's 6-2 in lower flight singles play on the year.
Clemson has been a white whale for the Cougars over the years, and in a series dating back to 1996, the Cougars are 0-17 against them. CofC will not be the Tigers' first opponent of the day, as Clemson is scheduled to face off with Marshall earlier in the day. The Tigers won their last match with ACC foe Pitt 7-0, but are only 6-8 on the season after going 10-11 last year. Fifth flight singles player Constanza Gorches has the team's best record at 8-4, while Ayan Broomfield is nationally ranked at No. 77.
Admission is free of charge for all CofC tennis matches. Live stats will be available for each contest at cofcstats.com. A video feed will also be available for the match against Clemson.
