Cougars Break Away Late to Defeat Georgia Southern

Statesboro, Ga. – Kelly Sinclair snapped a 4-4 tie with a two-run single in the fifth, and Izzy Berouty allowed only one run over the final three innings to lift the College of Charleston to a 10-5 win at Georgia Southern on Wednesday evening.

After Sinclair put the Cougars (15-11) in front, CofC proceeded to break the game open with a pair of runs in the sixth, including an RBI single by Sara Garcia, and two more in the seventh on a passed ball and wild pitch.

Sam Martin worked the third and fourth innings in relief of starter Sydney Shipley and allowed three hits and one run to pick up her third win of the year. Berouty entered in the bottom of the fifth and gave up an unearned run in the sixth to make it 8-5 but retired Morgan Robinson, who had homered earlier, on a liner to second with two on base.

Berouty then set down the Eagles (13-14) in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure her second save of the year in the first meeting between the former Southern Conference rivals since 2013.

CofC finished with nine hits, drew 13 walks and stole seven bases, including three by Taylor DuPree to increase her total to 16, the top mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. Katie Padilla joined Sinclair with two RBI and had two hits along with Garcia and Jordin Jones.

The Cougars opened up an early 4-0 lead, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jones in the first before tallying three in the second, sparked by a two-run double by Padilla and RBI infield single by DuPree. But Georgia Southern rallied with three in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a two-run single by Lydia Witkowski, and Robinson's solo homer in the fourth.

CofC returns home this weekend to open CAA play against Elon. The Cougars and Phoenix play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 and a single game on Sunday at 12:30.
