Ober, McRae Power Cougars To 3-2 Win Over The Citadel

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- Bailey Ober (Charlotte, N.C.) struck out 12 in eight innings of work to earn his third win in as many starts, and Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) launched a go-ahead three-run home run in the eighth to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to a 3-2 victory over The Citadel on Friday evening at Patriots Point.

The College of Charleston (5-4) plated three runs on six hits – including McRae's three-run bomb in the eighth – while the Cougars held The Citadel (3-5) to two tallies on six base knocks. Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) paced The College with two hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, while McRae accounted for all of the Cougars' runs with his three-run shot.

Ober went eight innings and allowed two runs on six hits, and struck out 12 to improve to 3-0 on the season. With the win, Ober moves into a tie for seventh on the program's all-time victories list with 20. Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) struck out the side in the ninth to record his second save of the season, and second of his career.

Clay Martin led the way for The Citadel with two hits, while William Kinney and Bryce Leasure each drove in a run. Bulldog starter JP Sears tossed seven shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out 15. Jonathan Sabo took the loss with three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning, as Aaron Lesiak recorded the final out of the eighth.

The Citadel struck for an early run in the top of the second, when Joe Sabatini tripled to right and came out moments later on an error by the Cougar shortstop. The Bulldogs would double the advantage to 2-0 in the eighth after Martin and Sabo hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners for Kinney. He followed with a perfect bunt down the first-base line to score Martin from third.

Manzo got the Cougar rally off the mark with a leadoff single in the home half, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. After a ground out moved him to third, Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) reached on a hit-by-pitch to put runners at the corners for McRae. The hot-hitting sophomore wasted little time, hammering a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left center for a three-run homer to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. The big fly was his team-leading fourth of the season, and gives him 17 RBIs through nine games.

The Cougars and Bulldogs will meet in the second game of the home-and-home weekend series on Saturday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Park in downtown Charleston. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm, and will pit the Cougars' Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) against Bulldog freshman Will Abbott.
