Cougars Cruise To 10-1 Matinee Win Over Bulldogs Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) tallied a career-high five hits, and Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) launched his second home run of the weekend to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to a 10-1 win over The Citadel on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the College of Charleston (6-4) extends its win-streak against The Citadel (3-6) to 10 games, as the Cougars plated 10 runs on 17 base knocks – including four extra-base hits. The College held the Bulldogs to one unearned run on six hits.

Manzo paced the offense with five singles to boost his season batting average to a blistering .528 clip, while Riley Knudsen (Cabot, Ark.) and Luke Morgan (New Lenox, Ill.) both added three base knocks. Morgan, Manzo, McRae, and Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.) each drove in two runs, while McRae scored three runs of his own.

Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) tossed three and one-third scoreless innings in his third start of the season, scattering two hits and striking out one. Tucker White (Sterling, Okla.) pitched two and one-third shutout frames, and struck out four in his CofC debut to pick up the win. Austin George (Mooresville, N.C.) continued his strong freshman campaign with two and one-third shutout innings, as Kris Kuhn (Summerville, S.C.) tossed the final one and one-third.

The Cougars sent a consistent wave of offense to the plate over the course of the afternoon, scoring in six of nine innings – including a three-run third. Manzo, Knudsen, and Dixon got the Cougars going in the first, when Manzo and Knudsen led off the frame with a single and a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. McRae would reach on an error two batters later, scoring Manzo from third, before Dixon's RBI single plated Knudsen to give the Cougars an early 2-0 lead.

Erven Roper (Easley, S.C.) extended the lead to 3-0 in the third, plating Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.) with a single to right after the Cougars walked the bases loaded to start the inning. Morgan followed with a two-run base knock to left center, scoring Dixon and McRae to push the advantage to 5-0.

Dixon stretched the margin to 6-0 with an RBI double in the fourth to score McRae, before Manzo's single to right in the fifth widened the gap to 7-0. After Manzo drove Seth Wall (Georgetown, S.C.) in with an infield single in the seventh, McRae capped the Cougar scoring with a two-run home run down the left field line in the eighth to push the lead to 10-0.

The Citadel got on the board with one run in the ninth after Ben Peden walked, and Bryce Leasure reached on a hit-by-pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Taylor Cothran reached on a miscue by the Cougar center fielder, which allowed Peden to score and Leasure to advance to second. On the play, Cothran was called out for passing Leasure between first and second as the ball hung in the air for the second out of the inning. Kuhn then retired Cole Buffington swinging to end the game.

The Cougars and Bulldogs will meet in the final game of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm, with Cougar sophomore Evan Sisk (Chester, S.C.) taking the mound opposite Bulldog freshman Will Pillsbury.
