DELAND, FLA. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (5-2) now sports an overall record that reflects their win on Saturday, when the Cougars knocked off the Stetson Hatters (1-8) by a score of 5-2.
Sarah Jane Jones and Sarah Zschunke set the tone for the College in doubles play, pulling off the flawless 6-0 win in the third flight to get things going. Anastasia Palaska and Mara Argyriou followed suit, pulling away from Sofia Ferding and Lucie Renault in the second flight for a 6-3 win to seal the doubles point.
In singles play, Argyriou and Rachel McNeely submitted inverse wins in the third and fourth flights, with the senior winning 6-4, 6-1 and the junior emerging as the 6-1-6-4 victor. The two wins put the College up 3-0 on the day.
Liza Fieldsend sealed the win in top flight action by way of a three-set brawl with Arijana Korac. Fieldsend won the first set 6-3 before struggling in the second in a 6-1 loss. That set up a full deciding third set, where Fieldsend ultimately won 6-4 to lock in the victory for CofC.
Turner Yates made her first appearance of the season in sixth flight action, squaring off with Alexe Vlaud in a match full of ups and downs. Yates looked dominant in the opening 6-0 first set, but she left the door open for Vlaud in the second set, who came back to win 7-6 to force a super tiebreak. Yates was able to collect herself with the match on the line in a close-fought 10-8 battle to preserve the win.
The Cougars will head straight from Florida to the Bahamas for their international trip. Their next official dual match will be back at home next Friday at Patriots Point when they host East Carolina.
