MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.) plated four runs with three hits – all doubles – and every member of the Cougars' batting order reached base, as No. 18 East Carolina rallied for a 15-12 win over the College of Charleston baseball team on Wednesday evening at Patriots Point.
East Carolina (10-3) scored 15 runs – including seven in the sixth inning – on 17 hits, six of which went for extra bases. College of Charleston (7-6) pushed 12 men across the plate with 14 base knocks, including four doubles.
Mundy and
Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) paced the Cougars with three hits each, as Mundy drove in a season-high four runs.
Erven Roper (Easley, S.C.) and
Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.) both collected two base knocks, while Dixon added two RBIs. Roper and
Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) each scored three runs.
Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) pitched two innings in his fourth start of the season, and allowed six runs on six hits.
Jakob Frishmuth (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) surrendered four runs in three frames of work, while
Austin George (Mooresville, N.C.) allowed three runs in two-thirds innings to take the loss.
Will Detwiler (Camden, S.C.),
Justin Baker (Huntersville, N.C.), and
Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) combined for the final three and one-third innings and allowed two runs on four hits.
Spencer Brickhouse led the way for ECU with a 3-for-4 effort, which included three runs scored, three RBIs and two home runs. Turner Brown drove in four runs with a grand slam, while Travis Watkins plated three runs.
Pirate starter Evan Voliva lasted just two thirds of an inning, as he and Jacob Wolfe combined to allow eight runs in one frame of work. Joe Ingle tossed two frames and surrendered three runs, while Davis Kirkpatrick pitched one and one-third innings. West Covington was credited with the win after recording two outs in the fifth. Matt Bridges threw four shutout innings to earn the save.
The Pirates got on the board early with three runs in the first, taking an early 3-0 lead on a three-run homer by Watkins. CofC knotted the score at 3-3 with three tallies in the home half, highlighted by an RBI double from Mundy. The Cougars added five runs in the second to take an 8-3 advantage following a two-run double from Mundy and a bases-loaded walk to
Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.).
After ECU plated four in the third to cut the lead to 8-7, Charleston answered with a three-run home half to stretch the margin to 11-7 on Dixon's two-run double. The Cougars added a run in the fifth on an RBI single from
Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) to push the advantage to 12-7.
The Pirates answered with seven runs in the sixth, including a grand slam by Brown and a two-shot from Brickhouse. The latter gave ECU its first lead since the first inning, before Riles singled home another run to put the Pirates ahead, 14-12. Brickhouse added a solo home run to center in the eighth to stretch the lead to 15-12.
The Cougars will return to the diamond on Friday when they open a three-game weekend series against Kent State at Patriots Point. First pitch on Friday is slated for 5:00 pm.
