Philadelphia, Pa. – Izzy Berouty worked around several jams to throw a complete game and earn her third win of the weekend as the College of Charleston finished off a Colonial Athletic Association sweep over Drexel with a 7-4 victory.
The Cougars matched their season high of seven games over .500, improving to 24-17 overall while evening their CAA record at 6-6. The sweep moved CofC up one spot in the league standings to fifth.
Berouty (7-4) gave up eight hits and struck out five and has accounted for the victory in each contest of the Cougars' current four-game winning streak. The freshman allowed the leadoff hitter to reach in six of the seven innings but was able to limit the damage while benefiting from a 12-hit CofC attack.
The game was tied at 2 heading to the sixth when the Cougars staged a rally with two outs and nobody on. Madi Brown walked and moved to second on a single by Dana Horgan. Kashmir Huckaby then capped her red-hot weekend with her fourth hit and RBI of the series to put CofC in front, and Yari Felix followed with a two-run single.
A double by Katie Padilla, her team-leading 10th of the season, highlighted a two-run seventh that made it 7-3. Drexel threatened in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run and putting two on with two out before Berouty retired Linda Rush, the Dragons' leading home run hitter, on a foul out to Kelly Sinclair to end the contest.
Brown singled behind Sara Garcia in the second and the duo pulled off a double steal, with Garcia scoring the first run of the game. Padilla singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by Brown to make it 2-0 in the fourth, but Drexel tied it in its half of the frame on a two-run homer by Taylor Lee.
Brown, Padilla, Felix and Taylor DuPree each had two hits for CofC, which has at least 10 hits in its last five games including 37 in the series against the Dragons.
The Cougars play six games next week beginning with a single home contest against Coastal Carolina Tuesday at 5:00. That will be CofC Faculty and Staff Night, with all faculty and staff entering free along with one guest. Proper ID must be shown to receive free tickets.
The next day, the Cougars play a recently-added doubleheader at Gardner-Webb beginning at 2:00 before hosting Delaware for a twinbill Saturday at 2:00 and a single game Sunday at 12:30.
