CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (18-8) begins its quest to reach the promised land this weekend, as the CAA Tournament begins with a first round matchup with the UNCW Seahawks (9-7) on Friday at 1 p.m.
The Cougars are the No. 3 seed in the tournament, while UNCW sports a No. 6 seed. The first round will take place at Elon University's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
CofC enters tournament play red-hot, having closed out the regular season with four consecutive victories over James Madison, Georgia Southern, Marquette, and most recently, UNCW. The Cougars have gotten strong play from its senior class this year. Liza Fieldsend leads the way in top flight singles as the reigning CAA Player of the Week and the 2016 Most Outstanding Player, sporting a 13-11 record. Mara Argyriou meanwhile has a team-best 20-5 record in singles, and has suffered just one defeat in her last 16 matches.
The Cougars and Seahawks will meet one another less than a week removed from their regular season finale, a 5-2 CofC win in Mt. Pleasant on Senior Day. This is the second straight season that the Cougars and Seahawks will face one another to conclude the tournament after closing out the regular season against each other. Last year, CofC blitzed the Seahawks 4-0 in the opening round of the tournament to advance.
All told, the College is 15-3 against UNCW on record. The last time the Seahawks were able to supplant the Cougars was back in 2014, when UNCW won the CAA Championship.
Madara Straume leads the Seahawks as the team's ace in singles play, sporting a team-best 13-3 record. She and Sabrina Barisano make for a potent doubles pairing as well, boasting a team-best 11-2 record in flights one and two. The last time the Cougars faced off against the Seahawks, Fieldsend got the better of Straume in singles play with a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
