ELON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (18-9) had its season come to an end in Friday's quarterfinal matchup with UNCW(10-7), as the No. 6 seeded Seahawks upset the Cougars 4-3.
UNCW got off to a strong start in doubles play, getting out to an early edge on all three courts before winning 6-4 on court one and 6-1 on court three to capture the point.
Turner Yates stepped up to knot the match up at 1-1 when she defeated Celeste Matute on court six by a score of 7-5, 6-3. UNCW seized the lead back when Liza Fieldsend succumbed 6-3, 6-2 on court one.
In the second flight, Mara Argyriou grinded out a 7-5, 6-3 win over Annika Sillanpaa to tie things back up, but UNCW fired back once again when Sabrina Barisano bested Rachel McNeely 6-2, 7-6(7). After that, Christi Woodson finished off a three-set, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 brawl with Alix Theodossiou to tie the match for the final time of the day.
That left Helena Nyikos and Xandra Fougner on court four as the deciding contest for the entire match. Nyikos was battling from a deficit, having surrendered the opening set 6-4. The Austrian fought back to go up 5-4 in the second set, but Fougner responded by taking three straight games to seal the match for herself and for her team.
"We're disappointed in the results of today's match, but we're forever grateful for the efforts and leadership that our two seniors have provided this team with," Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "I'm saddened that we weren't able to reward Mara, one of the hardest workers and best leaders in program history, with a conference championship. In the end, UNCW was too tough on the really key points for the match, and overall, their coaches did a great job of adjusting their game plan from last week."
With the loss, Argyriou and Fieldsend finish off their sterling CofC careers. Fieldsend goes out as the reigning 2016 CAA Most Outstanding Player, while Argyriou tallied a combined 112 wins in dual singles and doubles matches during her four years in the maroon and white.
