Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Lexee Emanuel blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth to snap a 4-4 tie and power the College of Charleston to a series-clinching 8-5 win over Delaware on Sunday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (28-19, 8-7 CAA) moved a season-high nine games over .500 and climbed into fourth place in the league standings, one-half game ahead of Elon (7-7), which dropped a doubleheader to Hofstra on Sunday. The Blue Hens fell to 18-23 and 6-9 in the CAA.
Delaware erased a 4-2 deficit in the top of the fourth on a two-run double by Mattie Nuccio before being betrayed by its defense in the bottom of the inning. A pair of errors sandwiched around a single by Kelly Sinclair loaded the bases with nobody out.
After a pop out, Emanuel stepped to the plate against reliever Jordan Cargile and hit her second home run of the series and fifth of the season deep over the fence in left center to put the Cougars back in front 8-4. It was the first grand slam of the season for a CofC hitter.
Sydney Shipley relieved starter Sam Martin in the fifth and allowed one run over the next three innings to pick up the save. She gave up three straight two-out singles in the seventh but retired Devon Steiner on a fielder's choice to wrap up the game.
Martin went the first four and gave up five hits and four runs but was able to pick up her six win of the season.
The Blue Hens took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Cougars quickly responded with three in their half of the inning, using the bunt with great success. Taylor DuPree and Sinclair reached via bunt singles, and Jordin Jones made it 1-0 with a base hit up the middle. A sacrifice by Taylor Belfiore and RBI bunt single by Emanuel followed by a hard grounder to left by Katie Padilla capped the three-run frame.
Emanuel finished with five RBI on the day and was 5-for-7 with a double, two homers, three runs scored and six RBI in the series, lifting her batting average from .286 to .319.
Steiner homered in the top of the second, and the Cougars added a run in the bottom of the inning when DuPree reached on a bunt single and scored on an error to make it 4-2. DuPree, Sinclair and Emanuel each had two of CofC's eight hits with DuPree scoring three times.
The Cougars are off until next weekend when they host Hofstra in a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m., and a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m. Following the Sunday game, the five members of the 2017 senior class – Martin, Padilla, Shipley, Dana Horgan and Kashmir Huckaby – will be honored.
