Cougars Fall to UNC Wilmington in Series Finale

Mount Pleasant, S.C. – UNC Wilmington scored twice in the fourth to break a 2-2 tie, and the Seahawks staved off a College of Charleston rally in the seventh to complete a Colonial Athletic Association sweep by a score of 6-3 Sunday at Patriots Point.

The Seahawks improved to 28-7-1 overall and 8-1 in the CAA to keep their one-game lead over James Madison. The Cougars dropped to 20-17 and 3-6 in the conference.

UNCW scored single runs in the first and second before CofC evened it in its half of the second by putting together five hits including RBI singles by Kelly Sinclair and Dana Horgan. A hit by Taylor DuPree, the first of her three on the day, loaded the bases with two outs but Madi Brown's line drive went right to third baseman Hannah Adamczyk.

Two innings later, Adamczyk put the Seahawks back in front with a run-scoring double, and Rachel Willis made it a 4-2 game with a sacrifice fly. All four runs (only one of them earned) were charged to Cougar starter Sydney Shipley, who suffered her second loss of the series and fell to 7-5 on the year.

Adamczyk continued her big day with a two-run single in the sixth off Sam Martin, and the Seahawks would need the insurance tallies when the Cougars threatened in the seventh. DuPree led off with a single and Dexlie Inman, batting for Brown, laced an RBI double into the gap in left center for her first career hit, pulling CofC within three.

Another pinch hitter, Lexee Emanuel, drew a one-out walk to put runners on the corners and bring the tie run to the plate. But Seahawk pitcher Peyton Jordan was able to strike out Sara Garcia and induce a ground out to short by Katie Padilla to thwart the comeback bid.

Jordan (13-2), who entered the game with an ERA of 1.02, was touched up for 10 hits with Sinclair and Padilla joining DuPree with multi-hit efforts.

The Cougars return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 game at Charleston Southern and hit the road next weekend for a CAA series at Drexel.
