AUSTIN, Texas – Senior All-American and Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.) shot an even-par 71 in the opening round to pace the College of Charleston men's golf team at the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Austin Regional on Monday at the University of Texas Golf Club.
Rainey is one of 16 Top 100-ranked players in the tournament field at No. 66 and was the low individual a year ago at the NCAA Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Regional. He birdied the 1st, 4th, 14th and 18th and is tied for 10th, while freshman and CAA Rookie of the Year Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) is tied for 18th (+1). Senior Philip Oweida (Charlotte, N.C.) is tied for 24th (+2).
As a team, the Cougars are currently in seventh (+7) one stroke back of a three-way tie for fourth between No. 50-ranked Iowa State, No. 26 Arizona State and No. 34 NC State (+6). Host and No. 16 Texas is the current leader (-7) followed by No. 22 Ole Miss in second (-2) and No. 3 Oklahoma State in third (+3).
"I am pleased with our start today," CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "We had a few nerves early and our guys really did a nice job settling into the round. It was really good to have five balls in play for the round and knowing that we can improve over the next two rounds."
The average score for the first round was 74.35. Freshman Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) was CofC's fourth counting score at +4. He is tied for 44th, while senior Parker Derby (Columbus, Ga.) is tied for 53rd (+5).
"This is a tough course and pars are going to be good," McEntire said. "We need to stay patient over the next two days. If we are able to do that, we will have a chance to make it to Sugar Grove (Ill.)."
The Top 5 teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of the six regional sites across the country – College Grove, Tenn. (host Middle Tennessee State), West Lafayette, Ind. (host Purdue), Stanford, Calif. (host Stanford), Austin, Texas (host Texas), Baton Rouge, La. (host LSU) and Sammamish, Wash. (host Washington) – will advance to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship hosted by Northern Illinois University on May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
The Cougars will be paired in tomorrow's second round with No. 10 Wake Forest and No. 46 Liberty and tee-off the No. 10 beginning at 8:00 a.m. (CT) / 9:00 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com
