CHARLESTON, S.C. – This week, College of Charleston senior Laura Fuenfstueck embarks on a journey no other women's golfer in school history has done before her.
In his 21 years at The College, Head Coach Jamie Futrell has had numerous talented players in Angie Hill (2003-06), Steffi Kirchmayr (2006-09), Sapna Patel (2000-04) and Leigh Whittaker (2008-12). Kirchmayr and Whittaker, the only two Cougars to compete as an individual at NCAA Regionals before Fuenfstueck.
But, there has only been one Laura Fuenfstueck – a three-time Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golfer of the Year, 2014 CAA Freshman of the Year, a four-time NCAA Championship participant (twice as a team and twice as an individual), and now, the first Cougar in program history with a chance to bring home a national championship title to Charleston.
Fuenfstueck is one of 12 individuals who will compete at the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships on May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The par-72 course will play at 6,343-yards and is hosted by Northern Illinois University.
"It is great to have Laura make the National Championship in her last go-around with us," Futrell said. "She has always been a great player, but this spring, she has really stepped up her short game. Laura has proven she can compete with anyone in the country."
After advancing to nationals with a fourth-place finish (-3) at the NCAA Athens (Ga.) Regional, Fuenfstueck jumped up to No. 52 in the Golfstat.com rankings heading into the national tournament. She was previously ranked No. 90, but beat out numerous ranked golfers in her showing at the UGA Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
The journey is no surprise from the promising star from Langen, Germany. She is currently ranked No. 69 in the world amateur golf rankings and looks to turn professional having already earned her bachelor's degree in finance from CofC.
"Laura has been a great ambassador for the College of Charleston both on-and-off the golf course," Futrell said. "While she is a world-class golfer, her academics are as good as her golf (3.931 grade-point average). Throw in the relationships she has developed with our donors and campus community – you have a student-athlete with the whole package. She will be missed greatly, but I am very glad we have this one last tournament to play in. Hopefully, she can continue to make history in her final collegiate event."
The championship format consists of 24 teams and 12 individuals (not on those teams competing) in 54 holes of stroke play, beginning Friday, May 19. Following Sunday's third round, the Top 15 teams along with nine individuals not on an advancing team will compete on Monday, May 22 to crown the individual national champion.
The Golf Channel will provide live NCAA Women's Golf Championships coverage beginning on Monday, May 22 with the Individual National Championship from 4-8 p.m. (ET).
Fuenfstueck is joined in the field by fellow individual players Martina Edelberg of Cal State Fullerton, Bianca Pagdanganan of Gonzaga, Nadine White of Campbell, Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest, Maya Walton of Princeton, Cara Gorlei of Arkansas, Camila Serrano of Florida International, Maddie Szeryk of Texas A&M, Julienne Soo of Oklahoma, Alex White of BYU and Susie Cavanagh of Oregon State.
The teams competing for the national championship include top-ranked Stanford, No. 2 Alabama, No. 7 Arizona State, No. 17 Baylor, No. 21 California, Clemson, No. 8 Duke, No. 3 Florida, No. 5 Florida State, No. 9 Furman, Kent State, No. 13 Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, No. 12 Northwestern, No. 25 Ohio State, Oregon, Pepperdine, No. 24 Purdue, No. 11 South Carolina, No. 6 Southern Cal, No. 16 Texas and Texas Tech.
Fuenfstueck will be paired with Pagdanganan of Gonzaga and Serrano of FIU in tomorrow's opening round and tee-off the No. 1 at 1:25 p.m. (CT) / 2:25 p.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com
