BLACKSBURG, Va. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision on the road at Virginia Tech on Friday night at Thompson Field.
Â
One of the toughest early stretches of their schedule against a pair of ACC and SEC foes, the Cougars (1-2) managed seven shots including three on target by junior forward
Laura Ortega (Aranjuez, Spain).
Â
The Hokies (2-0-1) took 21 shots scoring three of their four goals in the first half including one unassisted by Allyson Brown in the 25th minute. They netted another in the 42nd minute to go up 3-0 at halftime.
Â
"Virginia Tech is a tough team," CofC Head Coach
Christian Michner said. "They were a very organized, athletic and well-coached group. We didn't give the best account of ourselves out there. Although there were glimpses of some very nice things from us, we just didn't string it together for long enough."
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Genevieve Henderson (Jacksonville, Fla.) played the majority of the minutes in goal for the Cougars with seven saves, while the shutout was credited to Mandy McGlynn of VaTech.
Â
The Cougars will travel next to Tennessee – the Vols receiving votes in the national polls – for a Sunday, August 27 matinee on the pitch at 1:00 p.m. (ET) in Knoxville, Tenn.
Â
"We certainly have some things we can improve on going forward," Michner said. "I believe we'll sort those out as we learn from games like this. It's a short turnaround for us. Tennessee will be another environment that will really test us on Sunday. We're looking forward to another opportunity to see what we're made of and I expect us to step out ready to fight."
