CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) and
Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) reached double-digits in back-to-back matches, and
Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) averaged over 11 assists per set to lead the College of Charleston volleyball team to the team title at the Charleston Invitational, sponsored by Hampton Inn and Suites, West Ashley, with wins over Mercer and Buffalo on Saturday in TD Arena.
Madison and Rachel paced the Cougars with 24 and 23 kills, respectively, on the day, as Madison compiled a blistering .442 hitting percentage.
Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) added 18 kills, while
Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio) chipped in 15 smashes, five blocks, and a .400 attacking clip. Beckman totaled 80 assists and 21 digs, and
Jane Feddersen (Leesburg, Va.) accounted for a team-high eight blocks.
College of Charleston (10-3) defeated Mercer (4-6) by scores of 25-9, 22-25, 25-18, and 25-9 in the Cougars' first match of the day, as CofC posted 48 kills, eight blocks, seven service aces and a .256 hitting percentage. The Cougars held Mercer to 39 kills, six blocks, and a .063 attacking clip.
Madison led the way with 14 kills, three blocks and a .357 hitting percentage against Mercer, as Rachel and Freed each added 11 smashes. Beckman accounted for a double-double with 42 assists and 14 digs in addition to a match-high five service aces.
McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) and Freed totaled 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
Paige Alsten paced the Bears with 12 kills and a .458 hitting percentage, as Emily Krogman added a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Claire Waliczek dished out 28 assists while also posting 10 digs and two aces. Emilee Wissmach tallied 12 digs.
In the evening session, the Cougars took home the team title with a clean sweep of Buffalo (7-4) by scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 26-24. Charleston totaled 44 kills, 12 blocks, and 48 digs while attacking at a .305 clip. The Cougars held Buffalo to 35 kills, 47 digs, six blocks and a .120 hitting percentage.
Rachel paced the Cougars with 12 kills, as Mummey and Madison each added 10 smashes. Feddersen recorded a match-high six blocks to go along with four kills on eight swings, while Mummey tallied four stuffs of her own. Beckman dished out a match-high 38 assists to go along with eight digs; Madison and Freed each posted three blocks.
Logan Manusky (San Diego, Calif.) and Rhodes totaled 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Polina Prokudina led the way for Buffalo with 15 kills, while Andrea Mitrovic and Cassie Shado each added seven smashes. Larra Bickelhaupt and Mitrovic totaled 16 and 10 digs, respectively, while Scout McLerran tallied 32 assists, eight digs, and two aces.
Madison took home Tournament MVP honors, and was accompanied on the all-tournament team by Mummey and Rhodes. Alsten of Mercer, Lexi Kohut of Appalachian State, and Mitrovic and Prokudina of Buffalo rounded out the all-tournament team.
The Cougars return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on South Carolina State in non-conference play. First serve is slated for 7 pm.
