Cougars Cap Successful First Weekend

RALEIGH, N.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team took first at the SAISA Women's Regatta on Saturday by a six-point margin, and finished amongst the top 10 at both the Nevins Trophy and the Hatch Brown Trophy to cap a solid first weekend of competition.
 
In Raleigh at the SAISA Women's Regatta, the Cougars finished the five-race regatta with 29 points to beat out second-place Georgia Tech. Sophomore Nicole Simon (Coronado, Calif.) skipped A-Division to 13 points with junior crew Maura Lonergan (Marion, Mass.), while freshman skipper Marian Williams and senior crew Katherine Matheson (San Diego, Calif.) finished with 16 points in B-Division.
 
The College placed eighth at the Nevins Trophy in King's Point, N.Y. with 407 points, and finished 20 points behind seventh-place George Washington. Sophomore Nicolas Muller (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and junior Carter Cameron (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) skippered A-Division to 156 points alongside sophomore crew Laura Masterson (Kemah, Texas); in B-Division, senior Paris Henken (Coronado, Calif.) and junior Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) accumulated 173 points. Junior Gerald Williams (Sai Kung, Hong Kong, China) finished third in C-Division with 78 points.
 
After no wind all day Saturday on the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass., the Cougars finished ninth at the Hatch Brown Trophy with 89 points – four behind eighth-place George Washington. Senior Augie Dale and sophomore Katie Lounsbury totaled 25 points to finish sixth in A-Division, while senior skipper Dirk Johnson and senior crew Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.) sailed to 37 points in B-Division. Sophomore Steven Leuck (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Payton Alexander accumulated 27 points in C-Division.
 
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday, September 23 when they travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. for the SAISA Men's Singlehanded in addition to hosting the Leukemia Cup at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex.
