CONWAY, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (2-4) lost a heartbreaker early in overtime for the second straight game on Wednesday, as Coastal Carolina (3-4) picked up the game-winning goal 108 seconds into the extra period for the 2-1 win.
• The two teams played 80 scoreless minutes of soccer before Coastal Carolina finally drew first blood. Frantzdy Pierrot fired a shot from the top corner of the box, the ball deflected off a defender, and found its way to the back of the net to give CCU the 1-0 edge.
• The Cougars got a corner kick opportunity just four minutes later. Eli Dent sent in the attempt, and the Chanticleers got the first touch on the ball. However, it was mishandled, allowing Leland Archer a clean look that he buried in the back of the net with a right-footed blast, tying the game and sending it to overtime.
• CCU's Wes White was able to be the hero of the match when he streaked in from Kevin Shields' left and then managed to fire into the top of the net to end the game. CCU ended the game with a 12-9 advantage in shots.
• White had a chance at some heroics much earlier in the game, earning a PK opportunity in the 45th minute just before halftime. He fired low, but a diving Shields was able to reject the opportunity and preserve the clean sheet going into half.
• The Chanticleers extend their home-unbeaten streak to 28 games. Their last defeat at CCU Soccer Stadium came back in September 2014 against UAB.
The Cougars now return to the Lowcountry for their conference home-opener against Hofstra on Saturday at 1 p.m.
