Cougars Remain Unbeaten in Three After Battling Back to Claim Draw at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Facing a 2-0 deficit late in the first half, the College of Charleston women's soccer team battled back to claim a point and remain unbeaten in its last three Colonial Athletic Association matches. A first collegiate goal from Hannah Farmer alongside second-half goals from Rachel Kim and Raymara Barreto helped the Cougars to a 3-3 draw at Towson on Sunday afternoon.

Towson (3-11-2, 0-5-1), still winless in the CAA this season, started on the front foot by scoring inside ten minutes with a rebound from Jodie Burchell finding the back of Genevieve Henderson's goal.

As the game entered the midway point of the first half Laura Ortega found space in the right channel. Ortega burst into the box and crushed an effort against the crossbar with Berreto doing the same minutes later with an effort inside the penalty area.

The Tigers continued to threaten and doubled their lead five minutes before half-time, Afton Kalkoske finishing past Henderson to stun the Cougars into action.

Almost immediately Farmer responded. The freshman picked the ball up midway inside the Towson half, dribbled past a defender and whipped a 25-yard effort into the top left corner to pull Charleston back into the game with her first collegiate goal.

Towson began the brighter in the second half with a number of efforts inside the first ten minutes of play. Farmer continued to look threatening for CofC with an effort from the edge of the box that flew wide, Alyssa Beck also seeing a half-chance fly wide.

In the 68th minute Charleston won a free-kick in the right channel that kick-started two goals in two minutes to give The College a 3-2 lead. First Ortega whipped the free-kick to the penalty spot with Rachel Kim rising highest to head into the right corner past the outstretched keeper and level the game up.

Minutes later Barreto picked the ball up just inside the Towson half, beat her marker and smashed a 25-yard effort that flew into the bottom right corner to give Charleston its first lead of the day.

Again, Towson came straight back at the Cougars with Barreto and Kim blocking efforts while Meredith Holton comfortably saved a header in the Charleston goal.

As the game entered the final ten minutes the Tigers found the leveler. A cross from the right wing was headed down past Holton in the 83rd minute, with the final whistle confirming a 3-3 draw between the teams.

Overtime and then double overtime couldn't separate the two sides with Charleston (8-5-1, 3-1-1) making it three games unbeaten and seven CAA points from a possible nine after three straight road games. The Cougars now sit in a clear third in the CAA standings with 10 points, two behind second place James Madison and eight behind leaders Northeastern.

Head coach Christian Michner and his squad now look to a Thursday evening matchup against James Madison to open a three-game home stretch over seven days. kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Patriots Point Soccer Complex.

Postgame Quotes - Head Coach Christian Michner
On the game…

"What a game… Our girls showed a lot of heart to go from two goals down on the road to taking a 3-2 lead late in the game. Unfortunately, we had some uncharacteristic mistakes that led to goals and dampened the final result a little bit. We created a lot, I mean a lot, of scoring chances that we need to bury, but still did enough to get another positive result on the road. We are ready to be back at Patriots now for a good stretch of games and will take a lot away from this one."
