CHARLESTON, S.C. – It was a tale of two freshman as guards
Latrice Perkins and
Tyler Collins combined for 26 points to lead the College of Charleston women's basketball team to a 75-51 victory over South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon. With the win, The College moves to 2-0 on the season, the best start for the program under head coach
Candice M. Jackson.
Both freshmen finished the game with 13 points, Perkins going 5-5 from the field and 3-3 from the charity stripe to finish with a perfect shooting percentage in just 13 minutes of action. Both dished out five assists with Collins also grabbing four boards.
Arynn Eady started the scoring with a jumper in the opening minute with the game going back and forth through the first period.
Ericka Broughton made a layup and 'and one' to give Charleston a 15-11 lead,
Madison Taylor and Perkins scoring back-to-back in the paint to close out the quarter for The College with a six-point lead.
An 8-0 run to open the third quarter pushed the Charleston lead to 20 with the Cougars not looking back. A defensive effort through the period limited the Bulldogs (0-2) to just 18% shooting from the field;
Deja Ford also scoring eight of her 12 points in the second half of the game.
A 7-0 scoring run midway through the fourth extended the lead to 25, the highlight of the fourth period seeing
Dee Heath finding a wide-open
Madison Taylor in the corner who knocked down a three in front of the Charleston bench.
The Cougars (2-0) finished the game going 4 for 5 from the field to secure the 75-51 victory in the best start in program history under head coach
Candice M. Jackson. Charleston now looks to two true road games in the space of four days; a Thursday evening matchup at Campbell (7 p.m. tip) and a Sunday afternoon game at Wofford (2 p.m. tip).
Quotable – Head Coach Candice M. Jackson
"Very pleased… The way that we played we were pretty balanced. I thought we had a very good defensive effort apart from the fouling… We really have to work on moving our foot, keeping our hands up, really shutting down penetration, but overall very happy with the way the girls played. I still love the way we share the ball and so I'm really, really, excited about what we can do."
