CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) registered her 13
th double-double of the season, while
Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) and
McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) posted match-highs in assists and digs, respectively, to lead the third-seeded College of Charleston volleyball team to a 3-1 win over UNCW in the quarterfinal round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship on Friday evening in the Johnson Center.
"I thought the team played really well," head coach
Jason Kepner said. "We came out with a lot of energy and put a lot of pressure on UNCW, who blocked really well and put a lot of pressure on us as well. They serve a lot more aggressively in the third set, and even in the fourth set, did a nice job of taking a lead and putting us in difficult situations. We made a few plays down the stretch, with a few key digs and some good serves that were the difference."
College of Charleston (21-10) won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-13, 23-25, and 25-21 to advance to the CAA Semifinals for the fifth time since joining the conference six seasons ago. The Cougars finished the match with 61 kills, 82 digs, six blocks, six service aces, and a .237 hitting percentage. UNCW (15-12) totaled 51 kills, 59 digs, 14 blocks, and three service aces to go along with a .200 attacking clip.
"I think we were just a little more disciplined [down the stretch]," Rhodes said of the teams' adjustments for the fourth set. "We had a couple big plays that helped us catch fire, and finish it out in four."
Rachel carried her torrid play against league opponents in the CAA Championship, as the CAA Player of the Year recorded a double-double with 16 digs and a match-high 20 kills while hitting .273 (20-5-55). Beckman delivered another sensational performance with a contest-best 54 assists to go along with seven digs, one service ace, and two kills on five swings. Rhodes paced all defenders with a match-high 28 digs and also dropped in a pair of service aces.
"Devon [Rachel] and McKala [Rhodes] are both vital to our success," Beckman said. "I can always trust both of them - one to give me a great pass and the other to put it away."
Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) added 13 kills and two blocks, as
Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and 13 digs.
Peyton Eisnaugle (Dallas, Texas) hammered down nine kills and hit .429 (9-3-14), while
