Huff, Ford, Lead Charleston To Opening Night Victory

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Darien Huff and Deja Ford scored 19 each, Madison Taylor adding 16 in her first game as a Cougar, to lift Charleston to a 95-62 opening night victory inside TD Arena. In her Charleston debut, Tyler Collins dished out 12 assists, tied for the most in a single game in program history dating back to 1999.

Huff opened the game with her own 8-0 run, the highlight a Tyler Collins behind-the-back pass which eventually ended with a three pointer from the senior in the corner.

Arynn Eady grabbed the first of her six points with a jumper to push the lead to ten, the Crusaders calling a timeout to end the drought after Charleston increased the lead to 16-0 midway through the first quarter.

Huff led all scorers at the half with 11, Collins dishing out six assists inside 20 minutes, with Charleston dominating the boards and paint to hold a 48-29 lead.

Ford came alive in the second half, scoring 16 after the break with the highlight a steal and fast break basket in the opening minutes of the quarter.

Taylor knocked down a three in front of the Charleston bench late in the third to push her game total to 16, Ericka Broughton adding 11 points and seven rebounds from the bench. Collins finished with 12 assists and nine points, a single point from a double-double in her first collegiate game, and tied for first for the most assists in one game.

Dee Heath ended the Cougars scoring with the 13th three pointer of the game to make the final score 95-62.

The 95 points are tied for the sixth most in a game in program history, while the 13 three pointers are tied for the second most in history. With the win Charleston move to 3-2 in season openers under head coach Candice M. Jackson and now look to Saturday's home match against South Carolina State at 2 p.m.

Quotable – Head Coach Candice M. Jackson
"It was a really good team win. We had 23 assists and 13 turnovers which is a great way to open the season… Shooting 13-19 from three is big… Veteran guards came up big, each having 19 from Deja [Ford] and Darien [Huff]… Freshman are really coming in… So overall it was really big. We gotta tidy up some things on the defensive end I think and get better there. We're giving up too many three's and fouling a little too much, but overall really, really, proud of the effort."
