CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (5-16, 1-9) returns home this weekend to take on defending CAA champions Elon (13-7, 5-4) on Friday as well as Drexel (16-5, 8-1) on Sunday in TD Arena.
The Cougars face the Phoenix at 6:30 p.m. in commemoration of National Girl's and Women's Sports Day. The first 100 students in attendance will receive free hot dogs.
CofC then takes on Drexel at 1 p.m. in its annual Play4Kay Pink Game. Play4Kay is named for Coach Sandra Kay Yow, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 before passing away in 2009. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was officially founded on Dec. 3, 2007, fulfilling her vision to support advanced research, extend the quality of life for those battling breast cancer, and provide hope.
The College looks to snap its losing skid following a tough weekend on the road against William & Mary and James Madison. The Cougars established several individual milestones in defeat, with
Tanisha Brown setting a career-best in rebounds (17),
Cailin Dorsey hitting yet another scoring high (17), and
Darien Huff achieving a new high in assists (6).
The Cougars and Phoenix have an extensive history against one another, dating back even before the two played in the SoCon together. All told, Elon holds a narrow 15-14 edge in the series. Drexel holds a 5-3 all-time edge against the College, but CofC has found success at home against the Dragons recently, winning the last two encounters in TD Arena.
While reigning CAA champions Elon have been a dominant 8-0 at home this season, they've been just 1-4 in road games since conference play began. Their most impressive win of their conference slate came in the form of a 64-51 triumph at home over third place Delaware. This year, the Phoenix boasts the best scoring margin (+12.8) in the conference. They are led by senior small forward Shay Burnett, who ranks Top 5 in the CAA in scoring, rebounding, assists and free throw shooting.
Though Drexel graduated three of their best players over the summer in Meghan Creighton, Sarah Curran and Jessica Pellechio, the Dragons have been excellent this year with an 8-1 conference record. The Dragons own the best defense in the CAA, limiting opponents to just 56.6 PPG, and they also have the best turnover margin in the conference at +6.3. Senior small forward Kelsi Lidge is the team's best all-around player, averaging an 11-6-3 with 2 steals a game on 47% shooting.
