CofC Closes Out Regular Season with Two Matches in Wilmington

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (14-10) closes out its regular season this weekend with two 10 a.m. matches in Wilmington, N.C. against CAA opponents.
CofC will take on Towson (11-9) on Friday morning, and will proceed to square off with UNCW (1-10) the following day. Both matches will take place at the Seahawks' UNCW Tennis Complex.
The Cougars have won their last two encounters, and will hope to enter the CAA Tournament on a hot streak if they can pull off a successful outing in Wilmington. Historically, the Cougars have dominated both programs, going 5-1 against the Tigers and 15-4 against UNCW since joining NCAA Division I. However, both teams struck back last year, with Towson winning 5-2 in Maryland last year, and UNCW bouncing the Cougars from the CAA Tournament by way of a 4-3 win.
Towson's lost three of their last four matches dating back to last Saturday, having fallen to William & Mary, George Washington and Delaware. All told, they've gone 1-4 against CAA opponents, with their lone win coming 6-1 in a neutral site tilt against Hofstra. A.J. Gomer has been effective at the top of the singles rotation for the Tigers, going 4-2 across flights one and two in the month of April.
UNCW entered the season riding a streak of 15 years without a losing season, but 2018 will mark the end of that streak, as the Seahawks sit at 1-10. Much of that can be chaulked up to the absence of their ace Madara Straume, who's been out of the lineup with injury since early February. Xandra Fougner has been the team's most successful singles player, going a combined 4-1 in flights three, four and five.
