WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (15-10) picked up its first win of the season against a CAA opponent on Friday, defeating Towson (11-10) 6-1 in a neutral site contest.
Anastasia Palaska and Christi Woodson stormed out to a 6-3 doubles win on court one, but were checked when Towson picked up a 6-4 win on court three. Court two took 12 games to decide, as Helena Nyikos and Rachel McNeely were able to claim the point for the Cougars by outlasting Yevgeniya Shusterman and Lucy Gloninger 7-5.
CofC wasted no time in singles play, quickly putting the match out of reach. Palaska was the first off the courts with her 6-1, 6-2 drubbing of Renate van Oorschodt on court four. Turner Yates was close behind her, winning 6-1, 6-3 on court five, and the match was 3-0 CofC just like that.
The Cougars sealed the match when Woodson dispatched A.J. Gomer 6-3, 6-2, and Laura Arciniegas added another quick point for good measure on court six, where she defeated Gloninger 6-4, 6-1. The remaining two matches went three sets, and the two teams wound up splitting them. Towson's Nicole Shakhnazarova was able to storm back from a lost first set to win two tiebreaks on court one to win the Tigers' only point, but Rachel McNeely made it 6-1 on court three, defeating Shusterman 6-2, 5-7, 10-8.
With the win, the Cougars improve their all-time record against the Tigers to 6-1. CofC will close out its regular season matchup tomorrow morning when they take on UNCW.
