WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (16-10) was able to close out its regular season slate on a four-match winning streak on Saturday, defeating CAA rivals UNCW (1-11) by a 4-3 margin.
All three doubles encounters finished with 6-4 scores, but it was the Seahawks who claimed the points with wins on courts one and three. Seniors Helena Nyikos and Rachel McNeely were able to claw out a win in the second flight over Celeste Matute and Sarah Horn.
Christi Woodson was the first player off the courts for the Cougars, evening the match 1-1 with her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Matute. Soon after, the Seahawks were able to regain the lead when Maddy Muller-Hughes defeated McNeely in flight three play.
Momentum swung again when junior Laura Arciniegas defeated Lea Dubois-Rebiere 6-2, 6-3, once again leveling the match at two points apiece. Anastasia Palaska began tightening up midway through her second set, but some timely attention from trainer Armer Alcorn was able to help the Greek sophomore persevere to a 7-5, 6-2 win over Sabrina Barisano, putting CofC on the brink of victory.
Two matches remained as the contest hung in the balance, but were delayed briefly by passing rains. When they moved on, the Cougars and Seahawks split the final two matches. Though Nyikos fell 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on court one, Turner Yates was able to claim victory for the Cougars, finishing off Rishika Ravindran emphatically with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 win.
"I'm proud of our training staff, and I'm proud of the way we stayed mentally tough through a rain delay today," Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "Both Helena and Turner came out of the intermission ready to play, and I believe we won five straight games on court five to seal the win. That's the kind of killer instinct you're looking for at this point in the season."
The Cougars will learn of their postseason seeding and draws early next week. Their next competition will come during next weekend's CAA Tournament.
