Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Summer Jenkins turned in the top pitching performance of her young career, limiting James Madison (30-8, 10-2 Colonial Athletic Association) to only one hit in 4.1 shutout innings in relief, to lead the College of Charleston (24-20, 4-8) to a 1-0 victory in the series finale at Patriots Point.
Sara Garcia had two of the Cougars' five hits, including a double with two outs in the sixth to drive in Yari Felix for the lone run of the game. Given a chance to finish off a win over the two-time defending CAA champions, Jenkins set down the side in order in the seventh to hand JMU its first shutout of the season.
Cougar pitching was outstanding all weekend against one of the top hitting teams in the nation. JMU entered the series with a batting average of .318 and was scoring over 6.5 runs per game but was limited to a total of only six runs and 16 hits in the three contests despite winning twice.
Jenkins entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the third and struck out pinch hitter Jessica Mrozek. The sophomore worked a pair of 1-2-3 innings and did not allow more than one base runner in an inning the rest of the way in evening her record to 9-9.
The Dukes stranded seven runners over the first three innings, with Felix making a diving catch in center with two on in the first, and Jordin Jones tracking down a fly ball to the warning track in left to leave two more on in the second.
Charleston got only one runner as far as third until breaking through against Odicci Alexander in the sixth. Alexander suffered only her fourth loss in 20 decisions.
The Cougars play their final non-conference game of the season at Coastal Carolina on Tuesday before heading to Delaware for a CAA series next weekend.
