Conway, S.C. – Summer Jenkins tossed a five-hitter with a career-high six strikeouts and made two first inning runs stand up in a 2-1 victory over Coastal Carolina in the College of Charleston's final non-conference game of the season.
Jenkins continued a red-hot streak which has seen the sophomore right-hander allow only 13 hits and three runs with 10 strikeouts over her past 18.1 innings. Against the Chanticleers, she allowed more than one base runner in only one inning while eclipsing her previous high of five strikeouts set against Northern Illinois in February.
The Cougars (25-20) used three infield hits to score both their runs in the first. Taylor DuPree and Yari Felix led off with singles and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. DuPree came across on an error by Coastal pitcher Ashley Guillette, and Felix scored on a bunt single by Kelly Sinclair, her team-leading 37th RBI of the year.
The Chanticleers (22-23) scored their only run in the third on an RBI double by Alexis Alvino, but Jenkins was able to strand the potential tie run at second and allowed only one other runner to reach scoring position over the final four innings.
Charleston returns to Colonial Athletic Association play at Delaware this weekend, including a Saturday doubleheader and a Sunday single contest.
