CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's soccer team open the 2018 season with the 18th annual Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic. Charleston kickoff with Friday Night Futbol against West Virginia [7:30 p.m. kickoff] before taking on Stetson on Sunday [4:30 p.m.] to close out the tournament.
UNCW complete the tournament lineup and will face Stetson on Friday at 5 p.m. and West Virginia on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Scouting West Virginia
The Mountaineers have been selected to finish third in the 2018 Mid-American Conference Preseason Poll after going 9-6-4 last season. West Virginia's 25-man roster features 16 lettermen from a year ago, including nine that played in at least 15 matches in 2017. Eight newcomers also join the team.
Series History
The game will be the first between the two programs.
Scouting Stetson
The Hatters bring two preseason all-conference selections to Patriots Point after being picked to finish fifth in ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll. Joseph Melong, the 2017 ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year, and Ian McCauley, a first team all-conference selection last season, will lead a Stetson backline that allowed just eight goals during conference play last year.
Series History
Charleston lead the overall series 3-1-1 after winning three games on the spin in 1992, 1993 and 2008. Stetson took an overtime victory in 2009 before the teams played to a draw in 2010.
Last Meeting with the Hatters
The Charleston forwards dominated the last meeting in 2010 in Greenville, S.C., taking 24 shots to Stetsons' 15. Andy Craven got the goal for The College with a 20-yard strike into the top right corner to earn the draw with the Hatters.
Quotable – Head Coach Ralph Lundy
On the squad…
"We lost nine seniors and then we went to England (on a summer tour). Our underclassmen grew a lot and brought in a good bunch of newcomers but we're not putting it quite together. Right now, we've got some work to do. We've got to bring some things together better although there are many, many things to be encouraged about."
On the exhibitions…
"I think we should be 3-0 in the exhibitions, we were one win, one loss, one draw. I think we had the best of the play most of the time, but we didn't finish the job, so we've got to do better than that."
On the season opener against West Virginia…
"We've got a tough one Friday night and no messing around. West Virginia have a great program… NCAA Tournaments… they play in a very good league. It'll be a real challenge, a real great game for us."
On the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Tournament…
"Aaron scored three goals in three successive years that put us [CofC] into the NCAA Tournament. He loved the game, loved to play. The soccer community is coming out in great numbers, huge numbers. We really want to put on a great show for these young players and that's very important to me, for our team, to be leaders in this great soccer community that we have."
