Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Deutsch Leads The College to Win Over CCU

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sara Deutsch scored the lone goal to lead the College of Charleston women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., on Thursday evening.

Deutsch's goal, her first of the season, came just five minutes into the second half after Maddy Brill-Edwards had burst down the right wing. Brill-Edwards beat the left back and whipped the cross in for Deutsch to score at the back post with the goal proving to be the game winner.

In the opening exchanges both teams would create opportunities at goal with goalkeeper Genevieve Henderson making her first of six saves inside the opening three minutes.

From then on it was one-way traffic with CofC having four shots and three corner kicks in the first half.

Following Deutsch's goal in the 49th minute, both teams created opportunities with Henderson making the rest of her six saves in the final 25 minutes. Her last in the 88th minute confirmed the clean sheet and the win for Charleston to move to 2-1-0 on the young season.

Postgame Quotes - Head Coach Christian Michner
On the game…

"I'm so proud of how the Cougars played this evening against a tough Coastal Carolina team. They [CCU] were organized and tough to break down, but we did a great job of moving the ball and being patient in our possession."

On the goal…
"Sara [Deutsch] scored a great goal and one that we'd worked on at training all week. Maddy Brill-Edwards went forward with the ball on the right side, beat their left back and delivered a wonderful ball to Sara at the back post. We had worked on that movement over the course of the last week and it was nice to see it come to fruition. Overall it was a great night for the Cougars."
