CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team fell, 2-1, in double overtime to Drexel in the second round of Colonial Athletic Association play on Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars offense struggled to get going in the first half with
Raymara Barreto and
Laura Ortega coming closest. Barreto had an effort from 20-yards that flew wide with Ortega finding space on the right byline, but the Dragons goalkeeper blocked the cross.
Barreto once again found space in the second half and let fly from the edge of the box. The Dragons saved her effort with
Alyssa Beck quick on the rebound from eight yards, but her effort was also blocked out for a corner kick.
In the 55
th minute Ortega gave Charleston the lead. A free-kick on the left wing bounced on the six-yard line and into the top right corner to give Ortega her second free-kick goal in two games, fourth goal of the season and move her into sole possession of the all-time points record at CofC. The goal also moves her into joint second position for all-time goals at Charleston with 21.
Drexel leveled the game in the 68
th minute. A cross from the left wing from Emma Heckenberg found Morgan Drexel Rees who rose highest to head into the bottom corner.
The final whistle confirmed a first overtime period, Barreto coming closest for Charleston with another effort from the edge of the box, this one going a yard over the bar.
The Dragons almost found the winner, but a combination of
Meredith Tunney and
Genevieve Henderson kept the effort out with the rebound going over the bar.
Drexel continued to push forward, a long ball forward bounced between a couple of Charleston defenders with Shaelyn McCarty capitalizing to finish from 20-yards and give the Dragons the 2-1 win.
