Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Charleston Gain First CAA Point in 0-0 Draw with Drexel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team gained their first Colonial Athletic Association point after drawing 0-0 with Drexel at Patriots Point Soccer Complex. Double overtime couldn't separate the teams with Cameron Smith making six saves to claim his first clean sheet in his first start for Charleston.

The College started the brighter of the two teams, Charlie Marino having the first effort on target after good work from Tucker Heffron, but his effort from 15-yards was comfortably saved.

Steven Cahill sprayed a pin-point crossfield ball to Heffron in the 18th minute which eventually ended with Cole Gulledge heading over from a corner.

Smith made the first save of his Charleston career in the 27th minute, staying big to block an effort from 12-yards with Heffron again in the thick of the action as half-time approached. He layed Cornell Holland just inside the box but his left-footed effort was saved by Stephen Kopsachilis in the Drexel goal.

Smith kept Drexel from scoring in the closing stages of the second half, again staying big to deny Mathias Ebbesen as he burst through one-on-one.

In the 89th minute, Smith once again came to the rescue, blocking twice in quick succession to keep the Dragons from stealing a win.

Joao de Souza nearly won the game for Charleston in the first overtime period. A 25-yard left-footed volley just tipped over the bar by Kopsachilis.

In double overtime Holland and Rio Murray linked up at the top of the box with Holland's effort saved before the final whistle confirmed a 0-0 draw between the two teams.

Quotables – Head Coach Ralph Lundy
"My team fought tonight… played much, much better than Wednesday night. Everybody fought… it was a very tough, competitive, match. They have a good team, they've had great success this season so far, but what I'm most proud of is we fought every second. That was my great disappointment that we worked on… and we did it tonight, we fought and never gave up. Our quality was way, way, better for the 110 than it was on Wednesday night. It was a better day, it was improvement and we got a point… would have loved to have got a victory but they're a very good team and we'll just keep working one day at a time."
