
Rhodes, Cougars Sweep Away Bulldogs

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) set a new career-high and nearly equaled a program record with a match-high eight service aces to lead the No. 18 (VolleyballMag.com Mid-Major Poll) College of Charleston volleyball team to a straight-set sweep of South Carolina State on Tuesday evening in TD Arena.
The win snaps a four-match losing streak for the College of Charleston (3-4), and marks the first sweep for the Cougars this season by scores of 25-7, 25-18, and 25-13. Charleston totaled 44 kills, 48 digs, 13 service aces, and four blocks while hitting a blistering .407 as a team. The Cougars held South Carolina State (0-5) to 21 kills, two blocks, and a .145 attacking clip.
Freshman Sylvia Duggan (Charlotte, N.C.) accounted for her first collegiate double-double with match-highs of 10 kills and 13 digs while hitting .533. Rhodes totaled four kills on 10 swings without an error, while adding nine digs. The First Baptist product dropped in a match-and career-high eight service aces – including four straight to open the third set.
Mandy Napierala (Rochester, N.Y.) added eight kills on 11 swings (.636), while Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) connected for a kill on each of her five swings in the first set. Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) put down four kills on five swings, and Meghan Murphy (Orange, Calif.) chipped in four kills on 12 attempts. Amani Dunston (Agoura, Calif.) dished out 23 assists between the second and third sets after Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) supplied 11 assists in the opening stanza.
Alexus Holt led the way for South Carolina State with eight kills, nine digs, and a .353 hitting percentage. Kyra Marshall added six kills and six digs as T'Meyah Burgess recorded 15 assists. Burgess and Erin Hundley each accounted for seven digs.
The Cougars return to the court on Friday when they host UNC Asheville on the opening night of the three-day Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley CofC Invitational. First serve is slated for 7:00 pm.
