Game Recap: Volleyball |

Balanced Attack Pushes Cougars Past Bulldogs, Bucs Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Freshman Sylvia Duggan (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded a pair of double-doubles, Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) hit over .300 with more than 20 kills, and Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) added a double-double of her own to lead the No. 18 (VolleyballMag.com Mid-Major Poll) College of Charleston volleyball team to a pair of 3-1 victories over The Citadel and Charleston Southern on Saturday in TD Arena.

"We played really well to start the match [against Charleston Southern]," said head coach Jason Kepner. "We made a few changes and when we made the changes there was a lot more tentativeness throughout the remaining sets and a few things we need to keep working on. Overall, I'm happy to get the win in four."

College of Charleston (6-4) opened the day with a 23-25, 25-14, 25-11, 25-20 win over The Citadel (4-5), before defeating Charleston Southern (5-3) by scores of 25-11, 25-21, 23-25, and 25-22 to wrap the day.

Duggan posted a pair of double-doubles – her second and third in the last four matches – while totaling 29 kills and 31 digs to go along with a .290 hitting percentage. Madison tallied 24 kills, including a match-high 17 against The Citadel, while attacking at a .321 clip. Freed turned in a double-double against Charleston Southern with 17 kills and 16 digs, as Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) and Amani Dunston (Agoura, Calif.) totaled 64 and 33 assists, respectively. McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) and Logan Manusky (San Diego, Calif.) each collected 26 digs.

"Sylvia [Duggan] had a great weekend," continued Kepner. "She's been pretty consistent for us and a real pleasant surprise. She's been playing well in practice but I think she's been better than I thought she would be this weekend. She's put a lot of swings in, hit some angles, played great defense and also passed really well for us."
