Ford And Huff Combine For 38 Points As Charleston Falls At Elon

ELON, N.C. – Deja Ford and Darien Huff combined for 38 points, Ford leading all scorers with 22, as the College of Charleston fell 76-68 on Friday evening in round two of Colonial Athletic Association play.

Huff opened the games scoring with a three, her 19th straight game with at least one trey dating back to Feb. 18, 2018.

Elon used their own 6-0 run to take a 12-9 lead, Ford hitting one of two from the free throw line to cut the lead to 12-10 at the first media timeout.

The Phoenix (7-7, 2-1 CAA) continued to stay hot from the field, Charleston (4-9, 0-2 CAA) struggling to contain Elon's Emily Maupin in the paint, with the hosts holding a 24-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

An 8-0 Charleston run in the second was highlighted by three's from both Huff and Ford to cut the Phoenix lead to 26-24. The 12-2 offensive run continued with Ford adding a layup in the paint to level the game up at the midway point of the quarter.

Elon then used their own 6-0 run to take the lead right back, Tyler Collins knocking down a jumper before assisting Ericka Broughton to bring the Cougars back within two.

Back-to-back scoring runs either side of halftime from Elon increased their lead before the Cougars held the hosts to 1-7 from the field in the closing minutes of the third to stay in the game.

Huff got an and-one to get the Cougars offense rolling in the fourth, hitting double-digits for the 11th time this season, Bailaigh Larson grabbing two from the charity stripe to hit 150 career points.

The teams went back-and-forth through the last quarter until Charleston hit three straight to close out the game with Collins and Ford combining for seven points in the last minute alone.

Charleston held Elon scoreless from the field for the final 3:27, Elon knocking down free throws to ice the game and take the victory.

The Cougars now look to Sunday's road matchup at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. with the game broadcast live on the CAA Network.

Quotable – Head Coach Candice M. Jackson
"We had a lot of good opportunities, we played really good defense in the second half, we were able to turn them over, we were able to get stops, but we just have to convert... We're a transition team, when we get out in transition we have to capitalize on those opportunities... We did a good job of getting to the foul line, we were attacking the basket, Deja Ford had 22, Darien Huff had 16... This is a good lesson for us to take going into Sunday... We're right there, we are right there, we just have to keep pushing and keep plugging away... We did a lot of right things, we just didn't finish the plays and that's what we've got to get too."
