SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team opened the 2019 season with a 4-3 victory over USC Upstate on Friday afternoon as
Christi Woodson and
Turner Yates both picked up wins in doubles and singles action.
Woodson and
Anastasia Palaska took the 6-2 win on court one to open doubles play. The Spartans taking down
Clara Errard and Lily Labiche on court two with senior duo Yates and
Sarah Zschunke claiming a 6-5 (8-6) victory on court three to give Charleston the 1-0 lead.
In singles play Woodson, LaBiche and Yates claimed straight set victories over Acuna, Zarama and Hellberg of USC Upstate to push the Charleston lead to 4-0. The Spartans claimed wins over Palaska and Errard as both fell in three sets, Zschunke in two, with Charleston coming away with the 4-3 victory to open the year.
The Cougars continue the road travels with a matchup against Wake Forest tomorrow at 9 a.m. The Deacons are receiving votes in the ITA team rankings with three singles players ranked nationally alongside four doubles teams.
