Cougars Fall to Phoenix in Five-Set Slugfest

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Lauren Freed and Mandy Napierala each recorded a double-double and Tori Carpenter delivered a career-best performance as College of Charleston fell to Elon in a five-set nail-biter on Friday evening in Colonial Athletic Association play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Elon rallied from a 2-1 deficit with wins in the fourth and fifth sets to break a 20-match losing streak to the Cougars. The Phoenix racked up 28 kills in the final two frames compared to 13 from the Cougars to finish the match with a 64-57 edge. Elon compiled a .182 hitting percentage to go along with 83 digs and nine blocks; the Cougars finished the night with 12 blocks, 84 digs and a .179 attacking clip.
 
COUGAR OF THE MATCH
Freshman setter Tori Carpenter came within striking distance of a triple-double with season-highs of 44 assists, nine digs and six kills. The Brentwood, Tenn. native dished out 12 of her 44 assists in the Cougars' 25-17 third-set win. She also dropped in a pair of service aces.
 
NOTABLES
  • Napierala turned in her first double-double as a Cougar with career-highs of 17 kills and 12 digs.
  • Freed posted a double-double of her own with 12 kills and 19 digs.
  • Junior libero Logan Manusky accounted for a career- and match-high 29 digs, including 18 in the first three sets.
  • The Cougars collected 44 of their 57 kills in the opening three sets.
  • Senior Peyton Eisnaugle chipped in eight kills and four blocks.
  • Meghan Murphy accumulated seven kills, five blocks and four digs.
  • Freshman Emma Falk came off the bench to post four kills on seven swings to go along with a season-high six blocks.
  • Freshman Caroline Pender delivered a season-best seven digs in her first career start.
